Levest acts only as a contraceptive pill, and will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. You should always use a condom unless you are in a long term relationship with someone you know well.
There is no conclusive evidence that taking the pill causes weight gain, but it can promote fluid and water retention. However, you do need to be aware that if you are or you become very overweight when you are taking the pill, you will increase your risks of serious side effects and your doctor could advise you to stop using The Pill and tell you to use an alternative method of contraception.
Smoking is a major risk factor for thrombosis (formation of blood clots) when on combined oral contraception, especially if you are over 35 years of age. For this reason you are strongly advised to stop smoking when taking Levest.
In theory, you can take Levest from the time of your first period to the age of 40, provided you do not develop any contraindications (conditions that would make it inadvisable to keep using the pill). Speak to your doctor or other healthcare provider for more information, as they are the only ones who are fully aware of your medical history to properly advise you.
